Curling finish from left side of penalty area levels after Da Costa gave visitors lead in 1-1 draw at Toyota Field

SAN ANTONIO – Jose Gallegos scored a second-half equalizer as San Antonio FC played to a 1-1 draw with FC Tulsa on Saturday night at Toyota Field after Rodrigo da Costa had put the visitors ahead in the first half before settling for a point on the road in their own playoff pursuit.

Tulsa opened brightly and almost took the lead in just the fourth minute as a flicked header by Matt Sheldon from the center of the penalty area off a free kick by Marlon went toward the right corner of the net and produced a sharp save from San Antonio’s Matt Cardone. The hosts then settled and began to find half-chances of their own before in the 22nd minute Marcus Epps found Gallegos at a narrow angle in the left side of the box for a low effort that flashed past a pair of teammates in the six-yard area but just wide of the far post.

Da Costa broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, however, as he won a 50-50-ball 30 yards from the San Antonio goal on a pass infield and quickly picked his head up to deliver a curling shot to the bottom-right corner that clipped the inside of the upright and found the net. San Antonio had an opportunity to level eight minutes before the break as Nathan Fogaca fired a long-range free kick toward the top-left corner of the net, but Tulsa goalkeeper Austin Wormell was equal to the shot and parried it over the crossbar.

Gallegos produced a moment of brilliance to level for the hosts 12 minutes into the second half, however, as he controlled a deep cross from the right by Epps that was almost cleared by a defender, and after creating space for his right foot the 20-year-old floated a shot that looped over everyone in the six-yard area and picked out the far corner of the net.

Both Gallegos and Marlon had chances to put their respective sides ahead in the final half-hour with the San Antonio youngster firing just wide of the right post from distance and Tulsa’s Brazilian having a low shot from the top-left edge of the penalty area saved by Cardone. Ultimately honors would end even, however, as each remained in solid position for postseason action
