Argentine’s finish with five minutes to play backs up five-save shutout by Farr in 1-0 win at Carroll Stadium

INDIANAPOLIS – Manuel Arteaga’s late goal lifted Indy Eleven to a 1-0 victory against Louisville City FC on Saturday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium as the Boys in Blue claimed the Louisville Indianapolis Proximity Association Football Contest for the first time since joining the USL Championship in 2018 against their archrivals from Kentucky.

Looking for its second win at Carroll Stadium this season, LouCity almost got out to an idea start when Cameron Lancaster flicked a long ball on to Jorge Gonzalez, who pass into the left side of the penalty area found Antoine Hoppenot for a shot to the right corner that hit the right post. The ball caromed out toward Lancaster, but Indy goalkeeper Jordan Farr recovered in time to smother his header on the rebound to keep the game scoreless.

Clear chances remained limited for most of the first half, though, and it wasn’t until the half-hour mark that Indy seriously threatened to break the deadlock when Kevin Partida stepped up to win possession in his own half and quickly delivered a pass through to Nick Moon. The winger moved into the right side of the penalty area but his low shot was saved well by LouCity’s Chris Hubbard.

Louisville threatened again inside the opening minute of the second half as Hoppenot’s cross from the left went all the way through to Brian Ownby on the right, and he lifted a ball back centrally for a diving header by Gonzalez that Farr brilliantly turned around the right post with one hand. Farr was called on again to keep the game scoreless as Gonzalez blocked an attempted pass upfield by an Indy defender and got in on goal, but his shot to the left corner was turned wide of the left post.

The Boys in Blue grabbed the lead with five minutes to go, though as on a counterattack Arteaga played a ball forward for Nicky Law in the left channel, and the English forward drove into the penalty area before clipping a cross back centrally. LouCity’s Jonathan Gomez was unable to clear the delivery, and it set up for Arteaga to fire home first-time into the right side of the net to send the home fans into celebrations as the visitors were unable to find a way back.
