First-half goal on Barrera’s 11th assist of the season earns Hartford 1-0 win at Dillon Stadium

HARTFORD, Conn. – A first-half goal by Conor McGlynn earned Hartford Athletic a 1-0 victory against Loudoun United FC on Saturday night at Dillon Stadium as the hosts took a second consecutive victory and Danny Barrera recorded his league-leading 11th assist of the season.

Looking to avenge their defeat in the opening game of the home-and-home series between the sides on Wednesday, Loudoun almost took an early lead as a short corner on the right created space for a deep cross to Jace Clark in the left side of the penalty area, where he had time to control but fired his shot off the outside of the near post and behind for a goal kick.

The first good chance for the hosts arrived in the 19th minute as Justin Haak played a good ball over the top for El Salvador international Walmer Martinez, who controlled in the right side of the penalty area and then cut back for a shot that was parried away by Loudoun’s Jermaine Fordah. The hosts took the lead in the 33rd minute, though, as on a free kick that appeared to be setting up for Juan Carlos Obregon Jr. to shoot, Danny Barrera backheeled the ball behind him for Conor McGlynn to fire home from 30 yards into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Barrera set up another chance more conventionally seven minutes before time as he squeezed a pass in behind the defense for Preston Tabort Etaka, whose shot was well denied by Fordah. Two minutes into the second half the Loudoun goalkeeper was called on again to make a good save as he kept out Obregon on the doorstep as the hosts tried to add to their lead.

Obregon had another chance to add to the Athletic’s lead with 19 minutes to go as he snapped a header toward the right corner of the net off a cross by Barrera, only for Fordah to get across to turn the ball wide for a corner kick. Both sides exchanged chances late on as Loudoun pushed to find an equalizer, and with two minutes to go United’s Jovanny Bolivar drove a free kick from 30 yards just over the crossbar. Hartford saw out the victory, however, to send its fans home happy once again.
