In Episode 2, Kicks to the Pitch host Mando Fresko takes us through San Diego’s vibrant local culture

Episode 2 of new series Para Nosotros, Por Nosotros – the USL’s video collaboration with Los Angeles-based lifestyle brand Kicks to the Pitch – host Mando Fresko takes us to San Diego, California, dubbed “America’s Finest City” to look at the city’s culture and soccer heritage.

Thanks to its location on the Mexican border, there is plenty of soccer on offer in San Diego with both SD Loyal and Liga MX’s Xolos de Tijuana in close proximity. Fresko speaks to Roberto Ruiz about cross-border fandom, the ties that link the two cities, and identifying as part of both.

Fresko then checks in with Brandon Rodriguez, part of San Diego’s legendary Bridge Barkada street soccer crew to talk about how the short-sided games that have seen SD Loyal players and staff – including Manager Landon Donovan – visit and be part of has influenced the soccer and community culture SD Loyal has embraced.

Finally, Fresko talks to local standout and current San Diego Loyal SC playmaker Alejandro Guido, who has been a key figure for the side this season as it bids for a place in the USL Championship Playoffs. A former player for Xolos de Tijuana at the start of his professional career, Guido talks about his path in the game, and leading the way now for his hometown club.
