Attacking midfielder notches two goals, one assist in 4-2 win for visitors at Cashman Field

LAS VEGAS – Tumi Moshobane had two goals and one assist to lead San Diego Loyal SC to a 4-2 victory against Las Vegas Lights FC at Cashman Field on Saturday night to remain in second place in the USL Championship’s Pacific Division after coming back from a first-half deficit against their hosts.

Looking to complete a season sweep of the series, San Diego went close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute as Corey Hertzog found Alejandro Guido in the left side of the penalty area for a curled shot that hit the right post before Las Vegas was awarded a free kick following the scramble to get to the rebound.

Lights FC broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, however, as Christian Torres played a good pass to an overlapping Christopher Jaime as he broke into the right side of the penalty area to deliver a low cross that Danny Trejo tucked away from close range. The hosts threatened again seven minutes later as Cal Jennings flicked a near-post corner kick from the left by Torres on toward goal, where it was cleared by a defender to safety, but six minutes before the break SD Loyal drew level as off a low cross from the right by Miguel Ibarra, Guido had his first chance saved but put away the second effort on the rebound from close range.

San Diego hit the woodwork for the second time in the first half shortly before the break as after the hosts half-cleared an attacking move, SD Loyal midfielder Charlie Ward controlled and delivered a blistering shot from 30 yards that was tipped onto the crossbar by Las Vegas goalkeeper Alex Rando. Las Vegas’ goalkeeper then had to make an outstanding save to keep the game level in the 53rd minute when after coming off his line before a tussle in the penalty area, SD Loyal’s Corey Hertzog tried a chipped finish that Rando just got back in time to keep from crossing the line.

SD Loyal took the lead in the 65th minute, though, as Moshobane received possession at the top of the penalty area and cut past a defender, and while Rando was able to save his initial shot, San Diego’s leading scorer cleaned up the rebound for his ninth goal of the season. Four minutes later the South African had a second as he was the first to react after Lights FC’s defense blocked a cross at the top of the six-yard area and fired home the chance to make it a two-goal game.

Lights FC hit back with 17 minutes to go as Cal Jennings delivered a brilliant looping header back across goal after a well delivered cross from the top-left edge of the penalty area to the back post by Julian Vazquez. Two minutes later, Vazquez almost leveled as he fired a low shot that was parried away by SD Loyal goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira, and after Dylan Presto claimed the rebound for the hosts his cross set up Trejo for a bicycle kick that went over the crossbar.

The visitors restored their two-goal lead with 13 minutes to go, however, as Moshobane played provider, driving down the left side to create space for a low cross that was tucked away at the back post by Augustine Williams. While Las Vegas tried to respond once again, this time their efforts came up short as San Diego closed out the victory.
