Officials rule out goal by Marlon after collision as game ends in 1-1 draw at Children’s Mercy Park

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – FC Tulsa and Sporting Kansas City II played to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Children’s Mercy Park as the visitors were denied a late winner by Marlon following a collision between Sporting goalkeeper John Pulskamp and Tulsa’s Dario Suarez outside the penalty area that was ruled a foul by the Cuban forward after the Brazilian scored into an empty net.

Sporting had an early chance as winger Enoch Mushagalusa created space in the right side for a shot that flashed across the face of goal and wide of the left post, but the visitors took the lead in the eighth minute after Marlon was brought down in the penalty area by SKC II’s Isaiah LeFlore. Suarez stepped up to the spot for Tulsa and fired into the top-left corner of the net beyond the dive of Pulskamp for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The hosts had a chance to level just past the half-hour mark as they were awarded a free kick to the right of center, 25 yards from goal from which Jake Davis fired a curling shot over the defensive wall that was parried away by Tulsa goalkeeper Austin Wormell. Sporting leveled in the 65th minute, however, as Kayden Pierre received a pass from Ropapa Mensah on the right flank, and the full back drove toward the top of the penalty area past a defender and fired a low shot that took a slight deflection on its way to the bottom-left corner for his first professional goal.

Tulsa appeared to have retaken the lead with 13 minutes to go when Suarez beat both a defender and Pulskamp to a through-ball 10 yards outside the penalty area and clipped the ball forward before colliding with Pulskamp, after which Marlon picked up the loose ball and finished into the open net. The goal was ruled out, however, as after consulting with an assistant referee, the referee ruled Suarez had fouled Pulskamp in the collision, resulting in a Sporting free kick.

SKC II pushed for an equalizer as the game moved into stoppage time as Flore fired a low shot from the top-left edge of the penalty area just wide of the right post, while in the fourth minute of stoppage time Ozzie Cisneros had an effort from 20 yards that was parried by Wormell. The game ended level, however, as Tulsa took another point toward its bid to reach the postseason.
