Oakland sees home undefeated streak end at six games after 1-0 victory for Los Dos at Laney Stadium

OAKLAND, Calif. – A second-half penalty kick by Taylor Davila sent the LA Galaxy II to a 1-0 victory against Oakland Roots SC on Saturday night at Laney Stadium as the hosts were unable to find a late equalizer, suffering a hit to their recent run up the Pacific Division standings.

After a quiet start, Los Dos had the first good look on goal in the 13th minute as Jonathan Perez curled a free kick just over the crossbar from the top-left edge of the penalty area. Oakland’s first opportunity arrived 11 minutes later as Ariel Mbumba received possession inside the left half of the penalty area from Soya Takahashi before sending his finish wide, but in the 36th minute Perez went close again for the visitors as he drove down the right flank and into the penalty area only to be denied from a narrow angle by Oakland goalkeeper Paul Blanchette.

The Galaxy II had another chance early in the second half as Ethan Zubak broke forward into the penalty area but was denied the chance thanks to a fine sliding tackle by Oakland’s Kai Greene to clear. Roots SC then had a long-range effort by Matias Fissore saved comfortably by LA’s Justin vom Steeg, but with 20 minutes to go the hosts almost took the lead as Johnny Rodriguez cut in from the left side and curled a shot just wide of the far post.

Los Dos was given the chance to take the lead moments later, however, as Perez was brought down just inside the top of the penalty area. Taylor Davila stepped up to the spot and fired home a low shot to the right corner of the net to put the visitors ahead.

Oakland had a pair of late chances to level, both of which fell to Greene as he first held off a defender to create space for a shot from the top-left edge of the penalty area that was saved by Vom Steeg with a minute to go. Moving into stoppage time, the veteran center back also got free to put a diving header on a cross from the right to the back post by Memo Diaz, only for the Galaxy II goalkeeper to be well-positioned to save again, and that proved to be key as the visitors held on to break Oakland’s six-game home undefeated streak and keep their own playoff chances alive.
