Sacramento looks for postseason boost as San Antonio heads across country to wrap up road trip

Sacramento Republic FC's Jaime Villarreal and San Antonio FC's Matt Cardone are two of the holdovers from the last meeting between their clubs at Heart Health Park in 2019, with the teams set to square off again on Saturday night.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC and San Antonio FC will meet for the first time in two years on Saturday night at Heart Health Stadium in an interdivision contest that sees Sacramento in need of a victory to boost its postseason chances against a San Antonio side that headed west after a midweek victory on the east coast on Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET.

@SacRepublicFC (6-8-8, 26pts) suffered a 2-0 defeat last Saturday night against El Paso Locomotive FC at Southwest University Park as for the fourth time this season the side was held without an official shot on goal, the most in the Championship. Republic FC remains four points out of the playoffs positions going into this weekend’s game, while having played a game more than current fourth-placed side Tacoma Defiance, but this week continued to try and boost its attack, acquiring Minnesota United FC Homegrown forward Patrick Weah. Republic FC has had success in the past against San Antonio and won both of their meetings in 2019 including a 2-1 victory on home turf, and four players remain from the starting lineup that night two years on in Jordan McCrary, Shannon Gomez, Jaime Villarreal and Cameron Iwasa.

@SanAntonioFC (10-6-7, 37pts) has seen more changes since the last meeting between the sides with only stalwart goalkeeper Matt Cardone still present from the 2019 encounter at Heart Health Park, but the side heads to Sacramento off consecutive victories after a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls II on Wednesday night at MSU Soccer Park. A first-half goal by Jose Gallegos put the visitors ahead before an own goal early in the second half added to a lead SAFC then held firm to after Mohammed Abu was sent off for his second caution, resulting a suspension for Saturday’s game. San Antonio is now in second place in the Mountain Division and has a six-point cushion on the teams below the playoff line as it looks for its first victory in Sacramento in club history on Saturday night.
