Rowdies head to Atlanta in search of Championship’s shutout streak record

The Tampa Bay Rowdies took victories in all four meetings against Atlanta United during the 2020 season as they head to Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Saturday night.

KENNESAW, Ga. – Atlanta United 2 will play host to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium for the club’s second consecutive inter-division contest against a team from the Atlantic Division, with the Rowdies looking to continue a five-game winning streak that has also seen the side move to the verge of a league record. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

@atlutd2 (7-9-8, 29pts) played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night against the Atlantic Division’s Charleston Battery as Jackson Conway scored early in the first half before the Battery leveled after the break at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Atlanta’s result left it a point behind OKC Energy FC in the Central Division standings with eight games remaining in the regular season as it looks for the first playoff berth in club history. The side has earned four points from its past two games overall but will be hoping for better fortune against the Rowdies than it saw a season ago when the Rowdies swept all four meetings between the sides to maintain their undefeated record in nine overall meetings between the clubs.

The @TampaBayRowdies (16-6-1, 49pts) sit on the verge of history as they head to Georgia after running the club’s current shutout streak to 711 minutes in a 6-0 win against the New York Red Bulls II last Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium. Yann Ekra and Sebastian Guenzatti each had two goals and two assists to become the first teammates to accomplish the feat in the same game in league history, while Leo Fernandes had a pair of goals as well in the victory. The Rowdies are now 49 minutes from breaking the record set by Rio Grande Valley FC in 2016 of 759 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, while goalkeeper Evan Louro can equal Toros goalkeeper Callum Irving’s record of eight consecutive shutouts should Tampa Bay hold Atlanta off the scoreboard on Saturday. With the Rowdies also on a five-game winning streak, they will be hoping for victory and another three points toward their pursuit of homefield advantage throughout the 2021 USL Championship Playoffs.
