Atlanta, Charleston meet in interdivision match with both looking to gain ground in playoff races

Atlanta United 2 and leading scorer Aiden McFadden will host the Charleston Battery and Jarad van Schaik on Wednesday night for the only meeting between the sides this campaign in an interdivisonal matchup.

KENNESAW, Ga. – Atlanta United 2 and the Charleston Battery will meet on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in an interdivision matchup that sees both sides looking to boost their playoff hopes with Atlanta coming off a victory last time out and the Battery hoping to rebound as the sides meet for the only time this regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

@atlutd2 (7-9-7, 28pts) returns to action after having last taken a 1-0 victory against Indy Eleven on September 4 as a goal by Aiden McFadden proved the difference at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The goal was McFadden’s team-leading seventh of the season as the former Notre Dame standout has proven a key figure to Atlanta’s success this season. The side now sits two points out of the playoff places in the Central Division with nine games to go in the regular season, but a game in hand on current fourth-placed side OKC Energy FC. Atlanta has been a solid proposition on home turf this season, too, with the side currently having lost only twice in 11 prior outings at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Atlanta failed to defeat the Battery in four meetings a season ago, however, a run that will need to change if the hosts are to boost their chances of a first postseason berth.

The @Chas_Battery (8-8-4, 28pts) are also under pressure to take victory after falling 1-0 to the Atlantic Division-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies last Tuesday night in their most recent outing. Since then, the Charlotte Independence have taken back-to-back victories to open up a six-point gap between the Southern Derby rivals, and while the Battery have two games in hand to bridge that difference margin it has very little room for error going into its final 12 games of the season. Charleston has been solid for the most part this season, but it could get a boost from Bermuda playmaker Zeiko Lewis, who has scored four times in six games against Atlanta previously, the most goals against an individual club for Lewis in his career.
