Chances for both sides are denied as Memphis’ Murphy sees scoring streak come to an end

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Both teams had chances but neither found the net as Sporting Kansas City II and Memphis 901 FC played to a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening at Children’s Mercy Park, a result that extended both side’s winless streaks as 901 FC’s Kyle Murphy saw his scoring streak end at six games.

Hoping to rebound from defeat in midweek, Memphis opened brightly and almost struck in the second minute as a free kick from the right fell in the penalty area for Skylar Thomas to turn a sliding effort on goal that SKC II goalkeeper John Pulskamp turned away. The visitors had another good chance nine minutes later as Andre Reynolds II created space on the left and drove a cross into the six-yard area that Kadeem Dacres headed over the crossbar.

Sporting leading scorer Enoch Mushagalusa had an early sighter from distance as well for the hosts, but the Congolese winger went closer in the 14th minute when he cut in on his right foot and curled a shot just over the top-right corner of the net. That effort marked the opening of a good spell for SKC II that also saw Grayson Barber curl a shot just over from 25 yards beyond the top-left edge of the penalty area and Wilson Harris just send a finish wide of the right post off a cross by Amadou Dia just after the half-hour mark.

The game went to halftime scoreless as the teams exchanged half-chances late in the half, but Memphis went close to breaking the deadlock nine minutes into the second half as Dominic Oduro played Dacres in down the right for a cross to the near post that Murphy headed on target to force a good save onto his right post by Pulskamp. Murphy tried to follow up but was penalized as he caught Pulskamp when the goalkeeper went to smother any rebound chance.

Leston Paul also had a long-range effort by Leston Paul in the 66th minute that curled just wide of the right post, while Sporting had chances late on as Amadou Dia and Mushagalusa both had efforts blocked before Petar Cuic fired wide of the left upright in the final minute from 25 yards. There was no late winner to be found, though, as Memphis added another point in its bid to reach the postseason.
