Newlyweds Ian and Katie Peters went from alter to stadium on wedding day for celebration with extended ‘family’

When you’re a supporter to the extent Katie and Ian Peters are, you don’t miss a match.

Your club is in poor form? Ominous weather looming? Got married a few hours ago?

You don’t miss a match.

On June 19, hours after they said “I do” in front of their family and friends - some of whom are fellow Birmingham Legion FC supporters - the new Mr. and Mrs. Peters made their usual trek to BBVA Field. This time, however, they entered the supporters’ section to join their fellow members of the Magic City Brigade in a white dress and suit (minus the tie).

The couple has spent plenty of time at BBVA Field cheering on Legion FC - they rarely miss a home match. Ian has been supporting soccer in Birmingham for years. On one of their first dates three years ago, he introduced a skeptical Katie to soccer and ultimately Legion FC. She fell in love with the atmosphere, the culture, the family of supporters and, simultaneously, with Ian.

“I really was falling in love with the game and with him,” Katie said. “It was fun getting to know each other while we enjoyed the tailgates and the games together.”

Supporting Legion FC became an integral part of their life together, so when their wedding fell on the same day as a home match, it didn’t take long for them to decide where they’d end their special day.

“We had our wedding date set already and we knew there was a chance there would be a game on the same day,” Katie said. “The schedule was released, and Ian immediately said, ‘So we’re going to the game, right?’ and the more I thought about it, the more I was like ‘We have to go.’”

Despite the rain that ultimately resulted in the match against Austin Bold FC being postponed, Katie, Ian and several of their wedding guests and bridal party were in the stands ready to cheer on their squad. Ian’s best man Trent Giles and Katie’s bridesmaid Kaitlin Giles joined the newlyweds throughout their special day, from the ceremony to the reception and then again at the “after party” at BBVA Field. Friends like the Giles’, who are also part of the Magic City Brigade, are why Katie and Ian love being Legion FC supporters so much.

“It’s truly like one big family,” Katie said.

Although she isn’t big on superstitions, Katie happily claims that rain on your wedding day is good luck. Looking back, she and Ian have no regrets about spending the evening of their wedding being drenched by rain in the stands of BBVA Field alongside their fellow supporters ready to cheer on their club.

As they settle into married life, Katie expects she and Ian will ultimately retire in Birmingham. She thinks it’s likely they’ll be bringing kids with them to matches one day, and they’ll be decked out in Legion FC gear just like their mom and dad.
