Japanese midfielder’s late game-winner in Black Gold Derby against Tulsa claims monthly honor

TAMPA, Fla. – OKC Energy FC’s Hiroki Kurimoto has earned the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month award for July as his late game winner in the Black Gold Derby against FC Tulsa last month at ONEOK Field finished top of the poll conducted over the past weekend.

Kurimoto joined Energy FC this past offseason after being acquired from Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and scored the second goal of his career in the Championship to give his side a key victory as it pushed back into the playoff race in the Central Division after a slow start to the season. After Tulsa had leveled the game late through an outstanding free kick by Rodrigo da Costa, the Japanese midfielder scored a perfectly struck volley in the sixth minute of stoppage time to send the visitor to a vital three points.

Kurimoto’s goal earned 29 percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com, narrowly edging out New Mexico United’s Micheal Azira for his header that earned United a stoppage-time victory against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Louisville City FC’s Brian Ownby finished third on 15 percent for his pin-point finish against Sporting Kansas City II.
