Full-stretch denial in home victory against Colorado Springs topped poll conducted over past weekend

TAMPA, Fla. – New Mexico United’s Alex Tambakis has claimed the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for July as his key save that helped the side remain level with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC before grabbing a late victory at Isotopes Park finished first in the poll conducted over the past weekend.

Tambakis joined New Mexico this offseason after the transfer of Cody Mizell to New York City FC in Major League Soccer and has been among the leading goalkeepers in the Championship this season, continuing his impressive play in past seasons at North Carolina FC and the Charleston Battery among other stops. The Greek shot-stopper produced an outstanding save with the game level midway through the second half to keep out a header by the Switchbacks’ Michee Ngalina to the left corner of the net to keep the game all square, and it proved even bigger late in the game when United grabbed a pair of late goals to emerge with all three points.

Tambakis’ save earned 40 percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com, finishing ahead of the Charleston Battery’s Joe Kuzminsky, who took 34 percent for an outstanding penalty-kick save on the Charlotte Independence’s Sylvain Marveaux. Real Monarchs SLC’s Jeff Dewsnup finished third on 21 percent for an excellent double-save on the road against Austin Bold FC.
