Hosts set club records for fastest goal, most goals in single game in 6-2 victory at Fifth Third Bank Stadium

KENNESAW, Ga. – Tyler Wolff had a hat trick and an assist as Atlanta United 2 took a 6-2 victory against Indy Eleven on Sunday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium that also saw Darwin Matheus notch a goal and assist for the hosts as they recorded their most goals in a single game in club history.

Atlanta took the lead after just 12 seconds – tying for the fourth-fastest goal in the Championship’s history in the process as Indy played the ball back off the opening kickoff to goalkeeper Eric Dick, only for Wolff to block his attempted clearance and walk the ball into the net. Five minutes later, Wolff made it two for the hosts as Chris Allan played a pass up to Darwin Matheus, who controlled and then slid a ball into the right side of the penalty area for Wolff to run onto before finishing at the near post with a first-time finish.

The hosts continued their early pressure as both Macky Diop and Wolff fired chances off target, and it wasn’t until the 16th minute that Indy threatened to hit back when Gordon Wild played a precise pass through the Atlanta defense for Manuel Arteaga, who launched his finish well over the net. Atlanta continued to dominate the chances overall, though, and Robbie Mertz forced a fingertip save by Dick to turn a powerful shot from 25 yards over the crossbar on the half-hour mark.

Wild created another chance for the visitors seven minutes before halftime as he stole possession on the left in the attacking third and quickly delivered a cross that Arteaga headed wide of the right post. The Venezuelan went close three minutes later, though, as Jordan Hamilton clipped a cross from the left side of the penalty area to the right for Arteaga to hit first time, only for Atlanta goalkeeper Ben Lundgaard to get across to the right post and save.

Mertz had another chance late in the half for Atlanta as he cut into the left side of the penalty area onto his right foot and drove a low shot to the far corner that Dick got down well to turn wide of the post. Wolff completed his hat trick five minutes into the second half, however, as he intercepted a pass by Dick at the top of the penalty area before rounding the goalkeeper to his left and finishing into the open net.

Indy immediately hit back from the ensuing kickoff as Nick Moon picked up possession on the left side and drove centrally to the top of the penalty area before clipping a low shot back into the left corner of the net, but two minutes later Atlanta added a fourth as Caleb Wiley’s cross from the left picked out Matheus for a flicked header into the right corner of the net. The hosts then notched a fifth and Wolff added an assist to his tally for the night with a corner kick from the right which was headed home by Macky Diop.

The visitors responded again just past the hour-mark to cap a run of five goals in 11 minutes as Moon had an initial shot blocked, only for the ball to carom to Peter-Lee Vassel, whose half-volley took a deflection on its way to the back of the net. The game settled down in the final half-hour, although David Mejia hit the crossbar with 17 minutes to go after Phillip Goodrum found him in space with the defense scrambling to cover in the penalty area, but in second-half stoppage time Mejia capped the performance with a dipping shot from 25 yards that swerved into the right side of the net.
