Ownby records goal, assist as hosts notch 4-1 victory before crowd of 10,470 at Lynn Family Stadium.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC scored three times in the final 20 minutes as Brian Ownby notched a goal and assist to take a 4-1 victory against Sporting Kansas City II on Saturday night before a crowd of 10,470 fans at Lynn Family Stadium.

The visitors opened brightly as Enoch Mushagalusa looked dangerous on the left flank, but the first good chance on goal came to the LouCity as it was awarded a free kick beyond the top-left edge of the penalty area. Cameron Lancaster sent a dipping shot over the wall toward the left corner that forced a good low save by SKC II goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh.

Louisville controlled the majority of possession as the first half progressed but wasn’t able to find a telling opportunity in the final third. A corner kick from the right by Jonathan Gomez found Wesley Charpie at the back post in the 37th minute but his header went wide of the post. Another corner a few minutes later created another chance, but Sean Totsch’s header off Jorge Gonzalez’s delivery went over the crossbar.

The growing pressure by the hosts paid off in first-half stoppage time paid off in first-half stoppage time, however, as Gonzalez scored his second goal of the season. Louisville’s Corben Bone had an initial cross from the right punched away by McIntosh, but Paolo DelPiccolo kept the play alive and cycled Bone back in toward the right byline for a second cross that found Gonzalez for a low, first-time finish into the left corner of the net.

Louisville threatened again early in the second half as Gomez linked up with a pair of teammates to make a run down the left flank and into the penalty area only for McIntosh to smother his shot from just outside the six-yard area. Lancaster was then denied again on a second effort from a free kick, this time shooting to the bottom-right corner as McIntosh got down well to punch clear.

After weathering the pressure, though, Sporting got back on level terms as Kayden Pierre moved up the right side in his own half and then released Mushagalusa in behind the defense for a breakaway chance. The Congolese winger went to the right of LouCity goalkeeper Parker Siegfried and then tucked home a finish from a narrow angle into the open net.

But the visitors were only level for three minutes as Ownby and Gomez – who had each recorded four assists apiece in July – combined to put LouCity back ahead. Gomez took an in-swinging corner kick from the right and found Ownby, who rose above the defense at the top of the six-yard area and headed powerfully into the left corner of the net.

Ownby then picked up an assist of his own with 15 minutes to go as Gonzalez delivered a cross from the left to the back post where Ownby headed back into the six-yard area for Lancaster to nod home from close range for his ninth goal of the season. LouCity then wrapped up the game in stoppage time as Pat McMahon sent Antoine Hoppenot upfield on a counterattack, and Hoppenot delivered a crossfield pass for Jimmy McLaughlin, whose shot curled past McIntosh and had just enough pace to cross the goal line after clipping a trailing defender.
