Pair of first-half goals gave El Paso cushion in 2-0 victory despite ending game with 10 men

EL PASO, Texas – First-half goals by Diego Luna and Jose Aguinaga proved the difference as El Paso Locomotive FC took a 2-0 victory against San Antonio FC on Wednesday night at Southwest University Park to earn their sixth win in the past seven outings and maintain their lead at the top of the Championship’s Mountain Division.

Looking to turn the tables from their first meeting, San Antonio tried to get out to a fast start and notched its first shot on target inside the opening minute as Mohammed Abu fired a low effort from the left side of the penalty area that El Paso’s Logan Ketterer corralled. Locomotive FC’s Luna had the first good look for the hosts, meanwhile, as he exchanged a nice interplay with Eder Borelli to set up a shot from the top of the penalty area that was saved.

McCauley King went close for the hosts with a low shot in the 15th minute that went just wide of the left post, while Luna regained possession off a short corner on the right and cut into the penalty area and past a pair of defenders before firing into the near side-netting. The 17-year-old Luna put Locomotive FC ahead in the 29th minute, however, as he broke free in midfield before playing a pass to Dylan Mares centrally. Luna broke forward into space and received the return pass before slotting a low finish into the left side of the net.

Locomotive FC doubled its lead in first-half stoppage time as Borelli drove a low cross from the left that was controlled at the near post by Luis Solignac, who then cleverly looped a cross into the six-yard area that was met by Aguinaga’s header to record his second goal for the club. Borelli then went close just before the hour-mark for the hosts with a driven shot to the near post from the left that was parried behind for a corner by San Antonio’s Matt Cardone.

El Paso was reduced to 10 men in the 77th minute as Bryam Rebellon was shown his second yellow card of the game, but despite San Antonio’s late efforts to find a way back into the game they were thwarted by Locomotive FC’s defense. A pair of shots that flew off target by Emil Cuello and a blocked shot by Justin Dhillon was all the visitors got to show for their efforts as Locomotive FC’s home undefeated streak continued with another victory.
