Hosts rally after Real took lead through Wehan to take 3-1 victory at Southwest University Park

EL PASO, Texas – A pair of goals by second-half substitute Luis Solignac saw El Paso Locomotive FC to a 3-1 victory against Real Monarchs SLC on Saturday night at Southwest University Park as the hosts extended their undefeated streak at home after the Monarchs had taken an early lead.

Looking to build on a midweek victory, El Paso had a pair of early looks on goal from Andrew Fox and Josue Aaron Gomez that went off target, but it was the Monarchs that took the lead in the 17th minute when Charlie Wehan scored his second goal in as many games. The first-year pro took a layoff from Aris Briggs at the top of the penalty area and fired a shot that took a slight deflection but flew into the left corner of the net.

Wehan almost added a second goal four minutes later as Malik Johnson created space for a low cross from the left side of the penalty area that the attacking midfielder got a piece of at the top of the six-yard area but not enough to turn it on frame as the ball slid wide of the right post. Instead, Locomotive FC leveled in the 24th minute as Gomez found the net, taking advantage of a beautiful piece of play by Sebastian Velasquez that saw him first turn his marker on the edge of the penalty area and weave past another in the right side of the box before delivering a low cross through the area that Gomez was on hand to put home.

Real had a long-range chance in the 33rd minute that saw a shot by Jeizon Ramirez turned wide of the right post by El Paso’s Logan Ketterer, while Briggs sent a header just over the crossbar after a corner kick from the right by Noah Powder five minutes later. The game remained level into the second half before Gomez almost added a second for the hosts as he ran onto a pass by Velasquez into the left side of the penalty area but flicked his finish past the onrushing goalkeeper wide of the right post.

Luis Solignac put the hosts ahead in the 68th minute, however as he got onto the end of a cross from the left by Eder Borelli and put a solid header on target from close range. Real goalkeeper Jeffrey Dewsnup made a good initial save, but Solignac was there to finish off the rebound with a lifted finish that served as his second goal this week. El Paso almost added to its lead with 15 minutes to go as Dylan Mares curled a free kick just wide of the right post, while Dewsnupp made a good save to keep out Mares from a narrow angle on the right with 14 minutes to go.

Locomotive FC put the game away in the 81st minute, however, as Nick Ross played Solignac in behind the defense, allowing the Argentine to challenge Dewsnupp one-on-one before rounding him to the right and tucking his second goal of the game into an open net. The hosts put the game away from there as Ketterer made a pair of saves in stoppage time to preserve the side’s lead as El Paso continued its outstanding home form this year.
