Gonzalez, Greig on target for visitors in 2-1 victory at Children’s Mercy Park

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A pair of second half goals by Jorge Gonzalez and Kyle Greig, both assisted by Brian Ownby, sent Louisville City FC to a 2-1 victory against Sporting Kansas City II on Wednesday night at Children’s Mercy Park as the visitors ran their undefeated streak to four games.

Hoping to match its victory from its prior visit this season, LouCity went close early from a set piece as Greig’s header from a corner kick on the left by Niall McCabe was blocked over the crossbar by Isaiah LeFlore. A Kansas City native, Greig then set up a chance for Ownby with a through-ball that the winger lifted over the crossbar as he tried to lob the advancing goalkeeper from just outside the penalty area in the 21st minute.

The sides exchanged shot from beyond the penalty area in the minutes that followed with Louisville’s Paolo DelPiccolo forcing a low save by SKC II goalkeeper John Pulskamp and Rojay Smith firing a curling shot to the right corner for the hosts that LouCity’s Parker Siegfried palmed wide of the upright. Greig then set up Ownby for another chance late in the first half but the effort went well high and wide of the net to keep the game scoreless at the break.

That changed early in the second half as Ownby played provider for Gonzalez to open the scoring for the visitors. Less than a minute after the break, Gonzalez – who had come on as a halftime substitute – played a good give-and-go with Ownby to get into the right side of the penalty area and fired a low finish into the left corner of the net. LouCity added to its lead in the 56th minute as Ownby notched his second assist of the night with an angled cross from the right to the near post that was turned home by Greig for fifth goal of the season.

Ownby almost added a third for the visitors in the 67th minute as he drove into the penalty area from the right but sent his finish wide of the left post, and two minutes later Corben Bone had a shot charged down in the penalty area by SKC II defender Graham Smith. With five minutes to go Smith had to intervene again after a loose pass by Pulskamp turned over possession and gave Louisville a golden opportunity, only for the center back to deny Bone again with a goal line clearance as he provided cover for the mistake.

Sporting pulled a goal back with a minute to go as 17-year-old Ozzie Cisneros notched his first professional goal, taking advantage of a fine piece of control by Enoch Mushagalusa to bring down a ball upfield and then cut back a pass into the center of the penalty area that Cisneros hammered home first time into the net. The finish produced a late effort to level for the hosts, but Louisville was able to see out the remaining minutes and win its third game in the past four outings to move five points clear in the Central Division.
