Defender’s first professional goal takes top spot in fan poll for June’s honor

TAMPA, Fla. – New Mexico United’s Austin Yearwood has claimed the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month award for June as his first professional goal topped the poll conducted over the past weekend.

Yearwood made his debut in the Championship in the 2016 season with the Charlotte Independence and joined New Mexico United prior to its inaugural season two years ago. The full back had yet to find the net in his professional career, however, until his 82nd regular-season appearance on June 16 as he drove home a brilliant strike from beyond the top-left edge of the penalty area, picking out the top-right corner of the net to cement United’s lead against San Antonio FC at Isotopes Park.

Yearwood’s goal earned 38 percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com, finishing ahead of Hartford Athletic’s Connor McGlynn, who took 25 percent for his goal from beyond the halfway line against the New York Red Bulls II on June 5. New Mexico’s Josh Suggs finished third on 19 percent for his finish off a training ground corner routine against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on June 25.
