Ocampo-Chavez’s first-half goal for Tacoma canceled out by own goal in 1-1 draw

CARSON, Calif. – The LA Galaxy II rallied from a halftime deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with Tacoma Defiance on Sunday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park, extending Los Dos’ winless streak to six games as the Defiance earned their second road point of the season.

Each side had an early chance with the Galaxy II’s Taylor Davila seeing his header saved by Defiance goalkeeper Andy Thomas off a free kick from the right by Jorge Hernandez before Ray Serrano fired wide from 25 yards for the visitors. Tacoma took the lead in the 18th minute, however, as a solid challenge by Alex Villanueva just inside the LA half sent the ball forward into space where Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez was first to get to the ball. The former U.S. youth international navigated past a covering defender and shot low past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the season.

Ocampo-Chavez had a chance to add to his side’s lead nine minutes later as Tacoma’s pressure turned the ball over in the Galaxy II’s half, and a backward header by Carlos Anguiano found the forward for a chance to shoot from the top of the penalty area that went wide of the left post. The Galaxy II also had a chance late in the half, but Isaac Bawa’s header off a corner kick was comfortably handled by Thomas to send the Defiance to the break ahead.

The Galaxy II came out more brightly to start the second half and both Carlos Harvey and Cameron Dunbar had good efforts saved inside the opening 10 minutes of the half. The hosts got back on level terms in the 55th minute, though, when Dunbar and Owen Lambe connected in the left side of the penalty area to send Dunbar to the byline, and his low cross deflected off Tacoma defender Randy Mendoza and into the net for an own goal.

Tacoma had a chance to regain the lead midway through the second half as Taylor Mueller played a good ball over the LA back line that saw Obed Vargas remain onside, but the 15-year-old was caught from behind by an outstanding tackle by Los Dos captain Jesus Vazquez that denied the chance to shoot. The visitors also went close with 18 minutes to go as Danny Robles gained possession just outside the top of the penalty area but curled his shot just wide of the left post.

The visitors continued to press for a winner late on and with 13 minutes to go Galaxy II’s Eric Lopez cut out a cross from the left by Villanueva that would have reached Ocampo-Chavez for a potential close-range finish if not for the goalkeeper’s intervention. But while both teams had efforts from beyond the penalty area in the closing stages, neither was able to find a winner as the teams ended all square for the second time this season.
