Longtime rivals Charleston, Pittsburgh square off for first time in 2021 at Patriots Points

The Charleston Battery's Robbie Crawford and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC's Albert Dikwa will look to lead their sides as the longtime rivals meet for the first time this season on Wednesday night.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC will square off for the 21st time in the Championship’s regular season on Wednesday night as they meet for the first time this campaign at Patriots Point. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET, a change to the previously published kickoff time resulting from an abundance of caution due to the potential path of Tropical Storm Elsa.

The @Chas_Battery (3-3-2, 11pts) fell 1-0 to the Tampa Bay Rowdies last Friday night at Al Lang Stadium as Stavros Zarokostas was forced out of the game in the opening half-hour due to an injury, and with Zeiko Lewis also absent from the side due to 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Qualifying duty with Bermuda the Battery’s attack had difficulty in breaking down the Rowdies’ defense, recording only four shots and none on target for the contest. Charleston will be hopeful of a better performance back on home turf, where it has won its last two outings as the side looks to use its games in hand on the teams above it in the Atlantic Division standings to gain ground and move into the top four.

@RiverhoundsSC (6-4-2, 20pts) enters having won four of its last five games, however, with the side bouncing back from a midweek defeat in Week 11 with an impressive 1-0 win against the Charlotte Independence in which the final score didn’t give a true indication of the Hounds’ performance. Pittsburgh held a 9-1 advantage in shots on target over Charlotte to move firmly into second place in the division standings. The Hounds are one of the few sides to have consistently earned points on the road in Charleston in the Championship, having won twice and earned four draws in 11 prior visits to face the Battery.
