Goals by OCSC’s Damus, LA’s Judd inside opening 10 minutes result in 1-1 draw

CARSON, Calif. – Goals for both sides inside the opening 10 minutes saw the LA Galaxy II and Orange County SC play to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park as neither side was able to capitalize on its second-half chances to find a winner.

Entering on a recent hot streak, Orange County’s Ronaldo Damus extended his run to a goal in five consecutive games in just the fourth minute as an initial shot by Avionne Flanagan hit the Haitian international in front of goal and deflected kindly to allow Damus to notch his sixth goal of the season. Los Dos hit back quickly, however, as Isaac Bawa found Jorge Hernandez in space in the OCSC half, and he quickly delivered a ball for Preston Judd that the forward ran onto in the right channel before curling a finish around the advancing goalkeeper and in at the near post.

Both Damus and Brent Richards sent chances just off target as the visitors looked to regain the lead, while Los Dos produced the final chance of the half as Hernandez played provider again to set up an audacious chip by Axel Picazo from the top-right edge of the penalty area that floated just over the crossbar.

Damus appeared to have restored Orange County’s lead just past the hour-mark as he received possession and fired into the bottom-right corner of the net, only for the flag to be raised for offside. Five minutes later, Damus turned provider as he outdueled his marker for possession on the right and delivered a low cross for Chris Wehan that the midfielder pulled wide of the left post.

Wehan had another chance with 12 minutes to go as a ball over the Galaxy II back line fell nicely for him, but Los Dos goalkeeper Justin vom Steeg got off his line quickly to smother the shot and keep the game level. Michael Orozco then went close off a long throw-in by Richards by the right, but his header looped just over the crossbar. The last big chance of the game came to Los Dos, though, as Taylor Davila almost stole victory in the sixth minute of stoppage time after a cross from the left by Hernandez was spilled by OCSC goalkeeper Abraham Romero, but the defensive pressure arriving saw Davila fail to make clean contact on his finish and Romero corralled the ball, leaving honors even.
