Gomez also notched first professional goal for visitors in 3-2 victory at ONEOK Field

TULSA, Okla. – Cameron Lancaster scored twice and Jonathan Gomez once as Louisville City FC grabbed an early lead before holding on late in a 3-2 victory against FC Tulsa at ONEOK Field on Saturday night in the first meeting between the clubs in six years.

Louisville made a flying start in just the second minute as off a corner kick from the left, Lancaster delivered a right-footed ball that curled in at the back post for a brilliant Olimpico finish.

The visitors weren’t done, and in the seventh minute they doubled their lead as Patrick McMahon switched play from the right to Gomez advancing on the left, and the 17-year-old – who on Friday was named in the United States Men’s National Team’s preliminary roster for the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup – roofed a finish for his first goal in the professional ranks from the left side of the penalty area.

Lancaster added his second of the night after being brought down in the right side of the penalty area by Tulsa goalkeeper Sean Lewis, and the English forward stepped up to the spot and fired into the right side of the net to make it a three-goal lead in 10 minutes.

Tulsa tried to regain its footing after the early blows and in the 22nd minute found an answer as Rodrigo Da Costa found the net. Dario Suarez found the Brazilian in midfield and after he skipped past one defender, Da Costa turned inside and then out onto his left foot before sending a low shot that caromed off the inside of the right post and in.

The hosts had a chance to pull another goal back nine minutes before halftime as El Salvador international Joaquin Rivas played a give-and-go to get into the left side of the penalty area only to shoot into the side netting. Suarez also sent a long-range free kick on target a few minutes later, but LouCity goalkeeper Chris Hubbard gathered it easily, but 10 minutes into the second half the hosts had their second as a turnover in midfield allowed Marlon to quickly break into attack. The Brazilian moved into the right side of the penalty area and then after a quick move to create space fired a low shot to the bottom-left corner.

Rivas almost leveled things for Tulsa two minutes later as he was played in after a long goal kick was flicked on and controlled by the hosts allowing Rivas to break into the right side of the penalty area, but Hubbard came off his line quickly to smother the chance and save. Louisville also went the width of the woodwork away from adding to its lead in the 65th minute as Wesley Charpie headed off the crossbar after a corner kick from the left by Niall McCabe.

The hosts tried to take advantage of the let-off, and with 15 minutes to go Da Costa went close to his second of the night with a curling effort from the right side of the penalty area that went just wide of the left post. From there, however, LouCity’s defense tightened and sealed the side’s third consecutive victory.
