Williamson’s goal the difference in 1-0 victory as hosts suffer third consecutive defeat

INDIANAPOLIS – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC claimed its first victory on the road against Indy Eleven in its history as Tommy Williamson’s goal proved enough in a 1-0 victory at Michael A. Carroll Stadium that saw the visitors play the final half-hour down to 10 men while handing the Boys in Blue their third consecutive defeat.

The Hounds got onto the front foot quickly and notched the game’s first shot on goal in the fourth minute as Josh Gatt recycled a corner kick on the left flank and delivered a cross for a header by Jalen Robinson that Indy’s Jordan Farr claimed easily. The hosts almost gifted a chance a minute later on an attempted back-pass that was anticipated by Pittsburgh’s Preston Kilwien, but Farr held his ground well to take the speed off the ball as the defender poked it toward goal, allowing Indy’s Karl Ouimette to clear as Kilwien and Farr collided in the aftermath.

The game evened out as the first half went on as Indy gained more control over possession, and in the 26th minute the hosts almost grabbed the lead. After being fouled just left of center at the top of the penalty area, Gordon Wild fired a free kick toward the right corner of the net that hit the post and rebounded over Neveal Hackshaw, who had moved in anticipating a rebound, allowing Pittsburgh to clear.

While Indy suffered a slice of misfortune on its set piece chance, the reverse applied for the Hounds as they took the lead eight minutes before halftime. On a free kick right of center, Williamson appeared to look to shoot to the left corner, but the ball jammed between the defensive wall and another defender standing just to its right and ricocheted into the right side of the net as Farr was caught flat-footed going the opposite way.

After only recording Wild’s shot in the first half, Indy made a brighter start to the second, but the Hounds didn’t allow much in the way of clear chances aside from a long-range effort by Manuel Arteaga that flew high and wide of the right side of the net. The Hounds were reduced to 10 men with just under half-an-hour to go as Jelani Peters was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the space of three minutes for bringing down Arteaga, but the Hounds continued to hold firm defensively in the minutes that followed.

The hosts continued to build pressure as the game entered the final 10 minutes as second-half substitutes Jordan Hamilton and Nick Moon looked to find a spark in the attacking third. Pushing numbers forward, Indy almost handed the Hounds a chance to ice the game with two minutes to go as Farr misplayed a pass well out of his goal on the right, but after taking a touch to move centrally 45 yards from goal, Albert Dikwa’s attempt to shoot into an empty net hit a trailing defender to avert the danger.

Indy almost found an opening in stoppage time as Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jake Leeker came for a cross in the center of the penalty area, but juggled and spilled possession, only for a defender to clear the ball to safety. After a long-range shot by Hamilton was saved, however, the Hounds were able to withstand Indy’s final push and claim their third road win of the season.
