San Diego native notches goal, assist in 2-1 victory at Torero Stadium

SAN DIEGO – Alejandro Guido lead a late rally by San Diego Loyal SC with a goal and assist on Miguel Berry’s late winner as the hosts took a 2-1 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at Torero Stadium.

Los Dos’ leading scorer Jorge Hernandez almost grabbed the lead for the visitors in the fifth minute as he found space to shoot from 25 yards and rattled the right post. The visitors went close again 11 minutes later as Daniel Aguirre had a shot from almost 30 yards tipped just over the crossbar by San Diego goalkeeper Trey Muse, while a few minutes later Cameron Dunbar created space for a shot just inside the right edge of the penalty area that Muse turned away at the near post.

Jack Blake and Berry both had chances for the hosts around the half-hour mark that both ended up going wide of the left post, but the visitors threatened again 10 minutes before halftime as Danilo Acosta cut back a low cross from the left to the near corner of the six-yard area that Jonathan Perez redirected on goal, only for Muse to make an excellent reflex save.

San Diego’s best chance of the first half came two minutes before the break as in a 3-on-2 break, Corey Hertzog passed to his right for Blake and then held his central position for a return pass that he fired on net, only to see covering defender Owen Lambe block the effort to the left corner.

Los Dos took the lead in the 61st minute, however, as Hernandez picked up possession from Dunbar on the right and after cutting into the penalty area delivered a low shot to the near-post that snuck just inside the upright.

SD Loyal looked to respond quickly, and almost came up with an equalizer 10 minutes later as a cross from the right by Jack Metcalf found Hertzog at the back post. His shot was blocked and caromed to Tumi Moshobane, who had his effort well saved by Galaxy II goalkeeper Jonathan Klinsmann. A minute later Guido controlled a half-cleared long throw-in from the left on his chest and in the same movement fired a volley that rattled the crossbar.

There was no denying Guido with 15 minutes to go, however, as he took possession 40 yards from goal, juked past one defender and after moving into space laced a low shot from 25 yards just inside the left post to bring the hosts level.

Los Dos almost regained the lead five minutes later as a low cross from the right by Axel Picazo found Josh Drack cutting across the penalty area for a first-time shot to the right corner that Muse turned wide. With six minutes to go, however, Guido played provider as SD Loyal went ahead. Clipping a pass upfield past a defender just inside his own half, the San Diego native moved up the right flank and delivered a deep cross that set up a diving header for Berry back into the right corner of the net, sending the home fans into celebration and earning SD Loyal all three points.
