SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC announced on Thursday it will play host to Liga MX’s Club Tijuana Xolos in an international friendly at Torero Stadium on Saturday, July 10 at 5 p.m. PT.

The game will mark the first meeting of the two clubs that represent the San Diego-Tijuana region. The clash of border teams pairs SD Loyal against a Xolos side that has both claimed top-flight success in Liga MX and competed in the Concacaf Champion League in its history. Head Coach Landon Donovan’s side will take a break from a busy 2021 USL Championship season to face a Xolos club that is preparing for its upcoming Liga MX season. The match is set to be televised on Azteca America Canal 33.

“We have been waiting for this day for a very long time for the chance to bring Baja and Alta California together on the soccer field,” said Donovan. “We’re excited to play Xolos and celebrate soccer in this region. Should be a great match and we are very much looking forward to it.”

Club Tijuana was founded in 2007 as a second division team and earned promotion to the top league in 2011. It won a Mexican league title in 2012. It is also SD Loyal’s second international friendly match at Torero Stadium since its first contest at the venue, a 1-0 win against Costa Del Este FC of Panama in February 2020.

The match is expected to have a Torero Stadium at full capacity, and will be included in the club’s full season ticket memberships. Single match tickets starting at $25 are also now on sale at sdloyal.com/tickets.
