Northern California clubs meet for first time at Heart Health Park on Wednesday night

Sacramento Republic FC's Cameron Iwasa and Oakland Roots SC's Danny Flores will be looking to find the net as their sides meet for the first time in a potential new rivalry in the Championship.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC and Oakland Roots SC will square off for the first time in their histories on Wednesday night at Heart Health Park as the hosts look to rebound from defeat this past weekend on home turf. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 p.m. ET.

@SacRepublicFC (2-2-0, 6pts) suffered a second consecutive defeat on Saturday night as it fell 1-0 to Phoenix Rising FC, the first time the side had lost to Phoenix at home in its history. Sacramento’s attack struggled to make headway throughout the contest, finishing with its lowest Expected Goals mark of the season (0.46) as Santi Moar’s finish for Rising FC proved the difference in the contest. Sacramento is set to be without a trio of players this week as goalkeeper Rafael Diaz, defender Shannon Gomez and forward Kharlton Belmar are away on international duty, but the club has added a solid piece in 20-year-old New York City FC defender Chris Gloster who could make his debut on Wednesday. Republic FC’s main focus will likely be on reinvigorating its attack, however, which has been held scoreless in back-to-back games and has averaged only nine shots per game so far this season.

@OaklandRootsSC (1-1-0, 3pts) returns to action, meanwhile, looking to build on its first victory in the Championship last time out as it rallied twice to earn a 3-2 victory against the LA Galaxy II on May 23. Oakland fell behind twice but second-half goals by Danny Flores, the club’s first in the Championship, Memo Diaz, and Jeremy Bokila’s stoppage-time winner earned Roots SC all three points. Oakland will also be without a notable player due to international duty with goalkeeper Zeus De La Paz called up to compete for Curacao, and the side has similarly added a potential replacement on loan from New York City FC with goalkeeper Luis Barraza joining the club officially on Monday. With Wednesday’s clash the first of three in the span of little over a month – the sides are also set to clash on June 19 and July 9 – this first meeting could set the stage for a new rivalry to develop this season.
