Hamilton scores twice from the spot as Boys in Blue claim first LIPAFC victory since 2018

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Indy Eleven rallied from a halftime deficit to take its first victory against Louisville City FC since 2018 with a 2-1 win on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium as Jordan Hamilton scored twice from the penalty spot – including the winner in the 89th minute – to earn the visitors their third win of the season.

The hosts opened the game with more possession and in the eight minute a snap-shot from 20 yards by Cameron Lancaster produced the first save of the game by Indy goalkeeper Jordan Farr. Chances proved rare as the half moved on, though, as both sides looked solid defensively until the 32nd minute when Indy’s Nick Moon found space on the right side and delivered a great cross to the back post that went just over the head of Patrick Seagrist and away to safety.

Lancaster threatened more seriously 10 minutes before halftime as a cross from the right by Antoine Hoppenot deflected to the English forward just inside the top of the penalty area, but Lancaster was unable to put his finish on target. Neither too was Niall McCabe after a driving run from midfield a minute later that saw his shot flash over the crossbar, while Lancaster had another effort deflected wide for a corner as the visitors tried to raise the tempo as halftime approached.

The pressure told in the final minute of the first half as LouCity took the lead. A ball from the right by McCabe was challenged for by Lancaster at the near post, and the ball fell kindly for Corben Bone to shoot first-time in off the right post for his third goal in as many games against Indy dating back to the 2020 season.

Indy’s Farr had to be alert early in the second half as Hoppenot found space on the right side and fired a cross that deflected off the face of defender Neveal Hackshaw and headed goalward before Farr’s intervention. After going without an official shot in the first half, however, Indy got the chance to equalize just past the hour-mark as a counterattack sprang Hamilton forward before the Canadian forward was brought down in the penalty area. Hamilton stepped up to the spot himself and converted, shooting low to the left corner of the net.

The visitors the began to press forward looking for the lead, and second-half substitute Manuel Arteaga produced a beautiful piece of skill to beat his man near the left goal line before having a shot blocked behind by LouCity’s Pat McMahon. As time wound down with Louisville on the front foot late on, however, a crucial miscommunication between a pair of Louisville players allowed Arteaga to steal in and win possession and break forward alone before being brought down in the penalty area by LouCity goalkeeper Chris Hubbard. Hamilton again stepped up, and this time fired into the right corner of the net.

Louisville tried to respond immediately but a curling shot from 25 yards by Napo Matsoso was comfortably corralled by Farr, while McCabe fired a low shot wide of the left post in stoppage time after a neat piece of interplay at the top of the penalty area. There would be no equalizer for the hosts, however, as Indy claimed its second league victory against its rivals in its history.
