Goals by Okoli, Troncoso earn 2-0 victory for third consecutive win in 2021 Bold Stadium debut

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Bold FC claimed its third consecutive home opener victory as goals late in either half earned a 2-0 result against Real Monarchs SLC on Wednesday night at Bold Stadium for the host’s first win of the 2021 USL Championship season.

Playing the second game of a home-and-home series, the teams exchanged chances in the opening 15 minutes, but neither side was able to create any serious danger inside the penalty area with efforts by Real’s Milan Iloski and Austin’s Omar Gordon just before the half-hour mark forcing saves but not seriously testing Bold FC goalkeeper Elliot Panicco or his Monarchs counterpart Jeff Dewsnupp.

The hosts took the lead five minutes before the halftime break, however, after Emilio Ycaza was brought down just inside the penalty area as he looked to surge into the box, earning his side a penalty kick. Sean Okoli stepped up and fired a low shot to the left corner of the net for his first of the season.

The Monarchs almost hit back shortly before the break as a great crossfield pass found Noah Powder in space on the left flank, and the Trinidad and Tobago international cut into the penalty area but saw his fierce shot ring off the crossbar and rebound away to safety, leaving Austin ahead.

Bold FC almost doubled its lead seven minutes after the break as Juan Pablo Torres gained possession inside the right part of the penalty area but had his shot deflected wide of the left post. Ycaza also tried to find the net after stealing possession at the top of the penalty area only for his shot to curl well wide of the right post, while Iloski was denied an equalizer after a shot by Powder deflected his way for a sweetly hit half-volley that Panicco got across well to save at the left post.

Real hit the woodwork for a second time with 16 minutes to go as a free kick from the right wasn’t dealt with by Austin’s defense and fell to Jaziel Orozco, who lashed a shot that hit the right upright and rebounded to the top of the penalty area and was cleared. But while the Monarchs continued to press for a late equalizer, Austin wrapped up all three points in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Nick Hinds got in behind Real’s defense and centered for Jorge Troncoso to finish and seal the victory.
