Volleyed finish for second goal of the game gives hosts 2-2 draw as 901 FC takes first point of 2021

KENNESAW, Ga. – Aiden McFadden’s second goal of the game on a volley in second-half stoppage time earned Atlanta United 2 a 2-2 draw with Memphis 901 FC on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, extending the host’s undefeated run to four games as Memphis was forced to settle for its first point of the new season.

Coming off victory in its last outing on Wednesday night, Atlanta had an early chance to take the lead as Matias Benitez sent a curling free kick toward the left corner that was saved by Memphis’ John Berner. Memphis produced the opening two serious opportunities, however, as the visitors looked to break quickly when they got possession. Kadeem Dacres had the first, firing a low shot to the bottom-right corner from 20 yards that was sharply denied by Atlanta’s Alec Kann, and the goalkeeper came up with an even bigger save to keep out Dre Fortune after good work by Michael Salazar to create the chance five minutes later.

Atlanta took the lead in the 28th minute, however, as McFadden notched his third goal of the season. Awarded a free kick centrally, 25 yards from goal, McFadden curled home a shot to the top-left corner of the net that Berner couldn’t quite keep out.

Dacres threatened again for Memphis six minutes later as he shot just wide of the right post from 20 yards, but the veteran capped a good first half with 901 FC’s equalizer and first goal of the season as he lost his marker in the penalty area and put home a close-range finish off a cross by Mark Segbers from the right in the final minute of the half.

The hosts almost regained the lead two minutes into the second half as Jack Gurr cut in from the right and delivered a shot that Berner had to tip wide of the left post, while just past the hour-mark Benitez volleyed high after a cross from the left by Connor Stanley. 901 FC once again threatened on the break with just over 20 minutes to go as Dacres got free but was denied by Gurr’s goal line clearance before Fortune shot the rebound over the crossbar.

901 FC took the lead with 17 minutes to go, however, as Laurent Kissiedou scored against his former club. Dacres was again in the middle of things, starting the counterattack after a pass from Berner that allowed him to drive up the right channel, and after cutting centrally Dacres played a through-ball into the left side of the penalty area that Kissiedou dispatched into the right corner of the net.

Atlanta had a pair chances in the final 10 minutes to level as Robbie Mertz had a volleyed effort deflected wide of the left post by Memphis defender Zach Carroll, while David Mejia forced a good save out of Berner with a long-range drive. The hosts were then reduced to 10 men with three minutes to go as Gurr was sent off for his second yellow card of the game, but in the third minute of stoppage time a cross from the right by Mejia was tipped by Berner and came to McFadden, who volleyed into the right corner of the net to grab a point for Atlanta and maintain its undefeated run.
