U.S. Men’s National Team player drawn to club’s values and morals following 2020 season stances

San Diego Loyal SC has introduced U.S. Men's National Team player DeAndre Yedlin as the newest member of its ownership group, with the club's values and morals at the center of his attraction to the project.

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC on Thursday introduced current U.S. Men’s National Team player DeAndre Yedlin as the newest member of the club’s ownership group. The Seattle native, who currently plays for Turkish Süper Lig club Galatasaray, was drawn to SD Loyal after aligning with the club’s values and morals and their ability to put those into action during the inaugural campaign in 2020.

“I am very excited to be joining the San Diego Loyal ownership group,” said Yedlin. “After speaking with Andrew [Vassiliadis], Warren [Smith] and Landon [Donovan] about the club's values, morals and goals for the future and then seeing those being put to action made it hard for me to turn down this opportunity.”

Yedlin began playing soccer at the age of four and began his professional career with his hometown MLS club, Seattle Sounders FC after competing both at the University of Akron and for USL League Two side Sounders FC U23, where he was a League Two All-League selection in 2012. Prior to playing for his current team, Galatasaray, Yedlin had stints at a trio of English clubs, including the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. Primarily a defender, Yedlin has made 62 appearances with the U.S. Men's National Team, and on Thursday was selected in the squad for the side’s next contest on May 30 against Switzerland. He is a true activist for racial equality and regularly speaks out on his experiences as a Black American.

DeAndre Yedlin has made 62 appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team in his career, and on Thursday was named to the squad that will visit Switzerland at the end of this month for an internaitonal exhibition.

“It’s important that our entire team, from our players to staff and coaches to investors, adds value to San Diego Loyal,” said Andrew Vassiliadis, chairman of SD Loyal and lead investor. “DeAndre embodies this. The way he carries himself and the way he tackles his career. We couldn’t have imagined a better person to join us and our determination to make San Diego the soccer capital of North America.”

Launched on June 19, 2019, San Diego Loyal’s SD Loyal is built on four core values – Competition, Commitment, Connection and Camaraderie. The club made national headlines for their stance against racial and homophobic slurs that eliminated any chance of a spot in the USL Championship playoffs in 2021. The club looks forward to playing on their home pitch for the Home Opener on May 29.

“I want to thank Andrew, Warren and Landon as well as the San Diego Loyal staff, players and fans for allowing me to be a part of this club, culture and family,” added Yedlin. “I am looking forward to helping the club reach its goals while also continuing to uphold the values and morals we stand for!"
