Young goalkeeper among eight former Championship & League One players named for game vs. Switzerland

CHICAGO – 2019 USL Championship Final-winner David Ochoa was among the new faces to earn his first call-up to the U.S. Men’s National Team on Thursday, with the former Real Monarchs SLC goalkeeper being joined by six players with former USL Championship experience and another two with USL League One experience in Head Coach Greg Berhalter’s squad to face Switzerland on May 30 in Gallen, Switzerland.

Currently the starting goalkeeper for Real Salt Lake, Ochoa played a pivotal role in Real Monarchs SLC’s run to the 2019 USL Championship Title. The 20-year-old made 20 appearances, including starts in all four of the sides postseason contests, as the Monarchs defeated first regular-season title winner Phoenix Rising FC in the Western Conference Semifinals before becoming the first road team to win the USL Championship Final against Louisville City FC.

Ochoa has competed previously in the U.S. Youth National Team program, appearing at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup and earlier this year at Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying for the U.S. U-23s.

“We felt he had a strong Olympic qualifying,” said Berhalter. “The last game didn't go as planned but overall, he played well. We realize our goalkeeper pool lacks youth and it would be good to get him integrated.”

Joining Ochoa in the squad are five other players with prior Championship experience – 2016 USL Championship Title winner Tyler Adams, Brenden Aaronson, Mark McKenzie, Sebastian Lletget and Jackson Yueill – and two former USL League One standouts in North Texas SC’s Justin Che, who was named to the 2020 League One All-League First Team as well as being a finalist for both Defender of the Year and Young Player of the Year, and 2019 League One Title winner Bryan Reynolds, now of Serie A’s AS Roma.

Additionally four more players with USL League Two experience were named in the squad, with 2012 League Two All-League selection DeAndre Yedlin being joined by Josh Sargent, Daryl Dike and Tim Ream.
