Switchbacks open new downtown stadium looking to build on win as New Mexico visits

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC's Michael Edwards and New Mexico United's Amando Moreno could square off on Friday night as their sides meet in the first USL Championship game at 8,000-seat Weidner Field in downtown Colorado Springs.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will host its first USL Championship game at its new 8,000-seat downtown stadium Weidner Field on Friday night as New Mexico United visits with both teams looking to build off victories in their most recent outings. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, and the game will air live on SiriusXM FC (Ch.  157).

@SwitchbacksFC (1-1-0, 3pts) will host their seventh home opener at a 50 percent capacity under local guidelines, with the $42 million venue having taken approximately 18 months to be constructed in the southern section of downtown Colorado Springs since its groundbreaking in December 2019. The Switchbacks played to a 2-2 draw with Orange County SC in the first official contest at the venue as Hadji Barry scored twice on April 24, and the Guinean forward also notched a brace last Friday night in a 4-0 win against Sporting Kansas City II at Children’s Mercy Park. Michee Ngalina also shone against Sporting with one goal and two assists, and the hosts will be hoping for more of the same on what it set to be a memorable night for the club and the city.

@NewMexicoUTD (1-1-1, 4pts) arrives in Colorado Springs off a 3-1 victory in its home opener last Saturday night against Austin Bold FC which saw Sergio Rivas, Brian Brown and Amando Moreno all find the net in the club’s first game at Isotopes Park since the 2019 regular season. New Mexico held the upper hand on the Switchbacks in 2020 going 2-1-1 in their Group C series as all four games were played in Colorado Springs due to local health protocols in Albuquerque. The visitors will be hoping to continue their road success having also claimed victory when they visited Colorado Springs in the 2019 season as well.
