89th-minute equalizer gave visitors 2-2 draw after OKC had twice led contest

OKLAHOMA CITY – A late equalizer by Tyler Wolff earned Atlanta United 2 a 2-2 draw with OKC Energy FC on Sunday night at Taft Stadium that kept the hosts winless through four games to open the USL Championship season.

The visitors opened the game more brightly but were unable to create many clear chances to capitalize. Chris Allan fired over from the top-left edge of the six-yard area from a corner kick in the 10th minute, while 11 minutes later Ajani Fortune was unable to control his shot after a good pass through by Darwin Matheus.

Energy FC, though, took the lead on its first real chance of the game. After earning a corner on the left, the delivery into the penalty area deflected toward the penalty spot where Villyan Bijev was the fastest to react and shooting home while absorbing a challenge that forced him from the game shortly after.

OKC almost added to its lead five minutes into the second half as Aidan Daniels cut in from the left and fired a shot from 25 yards that was saved by Rocco Rios Novo, but six minutes later Atlanta hit back after Matheus was brought down in the penalty area. Fernando Benitez’s penalty kick to the right was saved by OKC goalkeeper CJ Cochran, but the rebound fell kindly for Benitez to clean up and finish.

Energy FC regained the lead with 25 minutes to go on another set piece, with Tucker Stephenson delivering a cross from the left that clipped off a pair of heads in the penalty area before reaching Osmond, who produced an instinctive scissor-kick finish on the turn to find the back of the net. Atlanta almost hit back eight minutes later as Brendan Lambe sliced through the OKC defense, but his shot was first parried by Cochran before a covering defender headed over the crossbar to safety.

But OKC was denied its first win of the season with a minute to go as Wolff found an equalizer. After a short corner from the left, the ball was delivered into the penalty area from outside the corner of the penalty area into a crowd of players and fell nicely for Wolff, who calmly shot home into the right corner of the net to secure his side a point.
