Brett’s retaken second-half penalty kick leads to 1-1 draw at Lynn Family Stadium

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A second-half penalty kick by Neco Brett saw Birmingham Legion FC earn a 1-1 draw against Louisville City FC on Saturday night at Lynn Family Stadium, giving the visitors their first point of the 2021 USL Championship season.

LouCity got out to a flying start, and after Legion FC had withstood a pair of early set pieces defensively the hosts struck from a third in just the third minute. A corner kick from the left was swung in by Corben Bon and Pat McMahon arrived from the back post to head firmly into the left corner of the net to send the crowd into celebration.

Birmingham tried to hit back quickly through midfielder Jaden Servania, who fired a low shot from 20 yards that was well saved by LouCity goalkeeper Chris Hubbard. After the early flurry the action began to even out as Legion FC came into the game, but while both sides had chances in the remainder of the first half – most notably for LouCity on a counterattack by Brian Ownby and a long-range shot by Prosper Kasim for the visitors – Louisville remained on top at the break.

After coming into the game after Louisville’s early flurry, Legion FC got back on level terms on the hour-mark after Brett was brought down in the penalty area. The Jamaican international was denied from the spot with his first effort, only for Hubbard to be ruled to have left his line early resulting in a retake that Brett dispatched to the right corner to make it 1-1.

Louisville almost regained the lead with 12 minutes remaining as Jonathan Gomez received the ball in the left side of the penalty area for a low shot to the near post that was parried away by Legion FC goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel.

Van Oekel had to be sharp again to deny Ownby with a minute to go as the winger found space for a shot in the left side of the penalty area, and after Niall McCabe got crowded out looking to send home a shot on the rebound the ball deflected to Napo Matsoso on the right, only for his effort to miss the target. After an extended period of stoppage time, though, Legion FC held firm to secure a point on the road.
