EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera’s second stint in charge got off to a winning start as his side earned a 1-0 victory against New Mexico United on Saturday night at H-E-B Park.
New Mexico had the first good look on goal as a clever flicked pass by Amando Moreno sent Isidro Martinez into space for a long-range shot that was saved by Toros goalkeeper Tyler Deric, and the veteran shot-stopper was alert again in the 36th minute to quickly come off his line and smother a shot by United’s Harry Swartz as he ran onto a through-ball from Moreno.
The Toros’ first big chance didn’t arrive until late in the first half as Christian Sorto hit a shot that took a deflection toward the left corner that New Mexico goalkeeper Alex Tambakis did well to turn wide. RGVFC began to apply more pressure in the second half, however, and with 25 minutes to go that was rewarded as Elvis Amoh took a pass from James Murphy and fired a low shot that took a wicked, looping deflection that gave Tambakis no chance to recover as it found the left corner of the net.
The Toros almost added a second five minutes later as a free kick from 30 yards was rifled toward the top-left corner of the net by Wan Kuzain, only for Tambakis to tip the effort over the crossbar. RGVFC’s Vicente Sanchez also went close to icing the game in stoppage time with a shot from the left side of the penalty area that was tipped away by Tambakis, but Amoh’s goal proved enough to send the hosts to victory.
