Second-half finish sends visitors to 1-0 win at Taft Stadium

OKLAHOMA CITY – Phillip Goodrum scored the only goal of the game as Atlanta United 2 handed OKC Energy FC its second consecutive defeat to start the season in a 1-0 win for the visitors at Taft Stadium on Saturday night.

The sides exchanged half-chances in the first half, but three minutes after the break Energy FC created the first big opportunity of the contest as a free kick by Robert Coronado on the right found Conor Donovan for a close-range header that Atlanta goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo smothered. Villyan Bijev then tried a creative back-heeled effort that slid just wide of the left post before Arun Basuljevic scuffed a shot wide in the 55th minute.

Atlanta grabbed the lead seven minutes later as William Reilly slipped Goodrum in-between defenders centrally with a clever pass, allowing the forward to shoot low past the advancing goalkeeper into the net. OKC looked to respond late on, and Donovan again threatened with a header off a set piece that hit the crossbar with seven minutes to go. That was as close as the hosts came to an equalizer, though, as Atlanta held on for victory.
