Oakland Signs Japanese Defender Soya Takahashi

25-year-old brings experience from J1 League, Scandinavian leagues


New Oakland Roots SC signing Soya Takahashi has competed in the top flight in both his native Japan and Sweden during his career.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Monday the club had signed Japanese defender Soya Takahashi ahead of the 2021 USL Championship season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“We are excited to welcome Soya’s versatility to the team,” said Roots Technical Director Jordan Ferrell. “His energy and intelligence fit right into our style of play and we look forward to watching him create goals with his incisive passing and crossing.”

Takahashi has made almost 100 professional appearances in his career, and most recently featured for Umeå FC in Sweden’s second division where he recorded one goal and three assists over 21 appearances during the 2020 season.

The 25-year-old got his start in his homeland of Japan with J1 League club Sanfrecce Hiroshima, where he spent five seasons. During that span, Takahashi made 21 appearances in Japan’s top flight, and also competed for Sanfrecce in the AFC Champions League, the Emperor’s Cup and the J.League Cup. He has also competed in Sweden’s top division, the Allsvenskan, for Athletic Eskilstuna during the 2019 season.
