La Copita opener sees hosts put in solid performance against MLS opposition

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC played to a scoreless draw against Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas at Toyota Field on Saturday afternoon in a La Copita preseason match. The Alamo City club subsequently fell 5-4 in a penalty shootout following the scoreless game, giving it one point in the four-team preseason tournament that also features Austin FC and Houston Dynamo FC.

“We are thankful for FC Dallas making the trip down, they are a fantastic squad,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We had a great opportunity to test our team identity against a very challenging opponent. We are also incredibly pleased with the number of young players that came through our Pro Academy who performed very well today.”

San Antonio had its best chance of the first half arrive midway through as a cross from the right by Ethan Bryant found Axel Sjoberg at the back post, but the lanky defender was unable to direct his header on frame. Dallas’ Franco Jara had a good opportunity soon after, but he skied his finish from 12 yards as SAFC defender PC closed him down.

Dallas had other chances before the halftime break, and then in the second half SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone was forced into a great second-half save to keep the game level. The hosts almost grabbed victory with five minutes to go when SAFC Pro Academy forward Abraham Lincon fired a low shot to the bottom-right corner that was saved by Dallas goalkeeper Phelipe Megiolaro.

Along with its first-team players, SAFC saw eight Pro Academy players including Lincon make appearances for the club in the second half of the match. San Antonio faces FC Dallas once again in another La Copita match next Friday in Frisco.
