Goalkeeper inks deal after two standout seasons with New Mexico United

NEW YORK – New York City FC announced on Thursday it had acquired goalkeeper Cody Mizell ahead of the 2021 Major League Soccer season, bringing the former USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year nominee permanently to the top-flight for the first time in his career.

Mizell spent the past two seasons with the Championship’s New Mexico United where he helped the side reach the USL Championship Playoffs appearances in each of its first two seasons. The 29-year-old recorded 51 appearances in the Championship’s regular season and playoffs for New Mexico and notched 119 saves and 11 shutouts.

Additionally, Mizell played a key role in New Mexico’s run to the Quarterfinals of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, helping the side claim victories in penalty shootouts against both Phoenix Rising FC and the Colorado Rapids during United’s run in the tournament. One of the club’s early signings before its inaugural season, the native of Woodstock, Georgia was a fan favorite as New Mexico established itself in the professional ranks.

“What Cody Mizell has meant to this club and community is beyond measure,” said New Mexico United President and CEO Peter Trevisani. “While his performances on the field have been incredible, his off-the-pitch community impact will never be forgotten. Cody is a true leader, beloved by club and community alike, and he will be a tremendous addition to his new club. We wish him all the best in his career, and know he will represent our community brilliantly at the next level.”

Mizell had previously spent a short stint in Major League Soccer in 2017 as he joined the Colorado Rapids on loan from the Charlotte Independence. The same year saw him earn nomination for the Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year award as he shone for the Independence with 88 saves in 32 appearances and five shutouts.

For his career, Mizell has made 108 appearances in the Championship’s regular season and playoffs, recording 23 clean sheets and 283 saves.

“What a pleasure it's been to work with Cody over the last two years with New Mexico United,” said New Mexico United Head Coach and Technical Director Troy Lesesne. “His approach to every single day is an inspiration, as he tackles each one with passion and enthusiasm. While we will certainly miss his presence on and off the field, we wish him the best in this next opportunity in his career.”
