Former Houston Dynamo defender returns to action with Bold FC

New Austin Bold FC signing Kofi Sarkodie has made more than 125 appearances in Major League Soccer as he arrives at his new club for the 2021 Championship season.

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Bold FC announced on Saturday the signing of MLS veteran defender Kofi Sarkodie for the 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, contract terms will not be released.

“I met Kofi at the U.S. National Team residency program and followed his amazing career in MLS and in Sweden. He’s a very experienced fullback and fierce competitor that have shown incredible leadership qualities over the years,” said Bold FC Head Coach Marcelo Serrano. “Kofi is at a stage in his career where he needs people and a club that will show him love and care, so he can bounce back once again.”

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Sarkodie was a member of the U.S. U-17 National Team’s Residency Program at IMG Academy before beginning his collegiate career with the University of Akron. The defender stood out for the Zips, helping the club to an NCCA Men’s Championship in 2010 while receiving the tournament’s Defensive Most Outstanding Player honors.

Sarkodie was selected seventh overall by Houston Dynamo in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and spent five seasons with the club. In over 120 appearances with Houston, the defender reached two MLS Cup finals and was named the 2013 Houston Dynamo Defender of the Year by the club. Sarkodie joined San Jose Earthquakes for two seasons before heading abroad with Swedish club Trelleborgs FF in 2018.

In addition to competing for the United States U-17 Men’s National Team at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in South Korea, Sarkodie has also made appearances for the United States U-18, U-20 and U-23 Men’s National Teams.

“I chose to come to The Bold because of [Austin General Manager] Rick Abbot and Coach Marcelo Serrano, and all the supporting staff. They’ve treated me with care and respect. In my experience, great management and great teams are strengthened by great leaders,” said Sarkodie. “Hopefully, I can give my experience and joy back to the community both on and off the pitch. I’m excited to be back in Texas. I love the energy, the fans, and the people of Austin.”
