AUSTIN, Texas – Austin Bold FC announced on Wednesday it had signed forward Sean Ugo Okoli ahead of the 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. Okoli arrives in Austin having previously earned both the Championship’s Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot awards in 2016.

“The best way to describe Sean is as a clinical finisher with a number nine’s hunger to score goals,” said Bold FC head coach Marcelo Serrano. “A player of his caliber can score 15 to 20 goals a season and play at the highest level. I want to help him reach the peak of his ability that I know is there. We’re excited to have him be a part of the Bold family and know he’s going to come into the team and add value every day.”

Okoli spent 2020 with USL Championship club Orange County SC. In 15 matches, the 28-year-old led the OCSC attack as top goalscorer with seven goals and was the co-assist leader with two.

“I’m very happy and excited to be joining Austin Bold! I’m looking forward to being a player the club and the city can rely on to help get the wins needed to achieve our targets,” said Okoli. “I’m a guy who’s eager to win games. My USL MVP and Golden Boot is a taste of what I can bring, and I’m looking forward to bring that same work ethic, experience, leadership, and a lot more to this team.”

A Washington state native, Okili joined the Seattle Sounders youth academy before playing collegiately at Wake Forest University. Okoli moved to the Seattle Sounders FC first team after signing a Homegrown Player contract before the 2014 season and made three appearances with his hometown club.

After spending 2015 with MLS club New England Revolution, Okoli joined FC Cincinnati for its inaugural season in the Championship. Okoli notched 16 goals in the regular season to claim the Golden Boot and was voted MVP. His performance attracted the attention of Major League Soccer’s New York City FC, where he signed in 2017, and he then continued his career in Europe. Okoli spent time with Sweden’s Landskrona BoIS, Norway’s FK Jerv, and Austria’s FC Pinzgau Saalfelden.
