LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC unveiled its first new signing for the 2021 USL Championship season on Monday as midfielder Tyler Gibson joined the club, pending league and federation approval. Gibson joins LouCity from rival Indy Eleven, where he spent the past two seasons.

“Tyler is a tremendous addition to our roster for the upcoming 2021 season,” said LouCity’s head coach and sporting director, John Hackworth. “He is a technically gifted midfielder that fits well into our style of play. More importantly, we know that Tyler suits our competitive culture as a person of high character.”

Gibson is coming off an impressive 2020 campaign that saw him lead the team with an 84 percent pass completion rate and rank second on the team with 880 passes. Gibson also recorded 19 interceptions and won 13 of 19 tackles defensively while recording 14 key passes as he appeared in every game of the regular season to lead the team with 1,385 minutes of action.

A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Gibson has played six professional seasons overall after a collegiate career at UNC-Charlotte that saw him named the Atlantic 10’s Midfielder of the Year in 2010 as well as earning four consecutive All-Conference First Team selections. The 29-year-old won a league title with the San Francisco Deltas in 2017 before joining then-USL Championship side FC Cincinnati for the 2018 season. Over the past two seasons he has proven a key player in the rivalry between Louisville and Indy, and now becomes the first player to make a permanent move from the Circle City to LouCity.

“Playing against Louisville City was always difficult,” Gibson said. “That style of play and type of culture in place isn’t everywhere. I’m very excited to get started in Louisville, and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and be part of their city.

“The organization is doing a lot of things right in terms of building a professional club. Becoming part of the winning culture in Louisville is the No. 1 thing I want to be part of.”

Gibson joins a contingent of 17 LouCity returners thus far announced, including a core of nine starters who led the boys in purple through a 13-game unbeaten streak and back to the USL's Eastern Conference Final.

“We have been looking at Tyler for a couple years now and admire the way he goes about his business every weekend,” said LouCity Technical Director and assistant coach Danny Cruz. “We are excited to be able to add another quality midfielder to this impressive group. He is a player of high character who will be an excellent fit to the culture here at Louisville City. We are happy to have him and look forward to getting him integrated with the group.”
