Veteran goalkeeper joined by Bruce, Hamilton and Beigl for 2021 season with United

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Veteran goalkeeper Cody Mizell is among four additional players set to return to New Mexico United for the 2021 Championship season announced this week by the club. In addition to re-signing Mizell, the club also struck new deals with midfielder Daniel Bruce, defender Sam Hamilton and goalkeeper Philipp Beigl, pending league and federation approval.

Mizell has been United’s starting goalkeeper for the club’s first two seasons and has made 51 appearances across the regular season and playoffs while helping the side reach the postseason in both seasons. The 29-year-old – who was nominated for the Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2017 while with the Charlotte Independence – has recorded 283 saves in 108 appearances all-time in the Championship while recording 23 shutouts.

Bruce served as a versatile piece for Head Coach Troy Lesesne over the past season as he played at full back in addition to his more convention midfield role as United battled injuries. A native of Warrington, England, Bruce joined the professional ranks with New Mexico ahead of its inaugural season in 2019 and has made 32 appearances in the regular season and playoffs while recording two goals and three assists.

Hamilton will enter his fifth season overall in the professional ranks in 2021 after also spending the past two seasons in United’s colors. The 25-year-old, Denver native had previously played for both Phoenix Rising FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC while on loan from Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and has recorded 66 appearances in the regular season and playoffs in his career. This past season, Hamilton made 14 appearances as the club reached the Western Conference Semifinals of the 2020 Championship Playoffs.

Beigl will return for a second season as Mizell’s understudy in goal after joining the club last offseason. The native of Germany had previously competed for TSV Landsberg and FC Memmingen in his home country before making the move to New Mexico.
