SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC announced on Thursday it had signed Maalique Foster for the 2021 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval.

“Maalique is a rising talent that we believe is poised for a breakout 2021 season,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “His ability to stretch the defense will add a new dimension to our attack, and we are excited to add his consistent scoring production to our team.”

The 24-year-old midfielder has experience on both wings, as well as a central forward. He joins Republic FC after a season on loan with Ironi Kiryat Shmona of the Israeli Premier League. He joined the club in January mid-campaign for 13 appearances, after a season in the Costa Rican Primera División Apertura with Santos de Guápiles FC where he netted five goals in 12 matches.

A native of St. Catherine, Jamaica, Foster spent the first half of the 2019 USL Championship season on loan with Rio Grande Valley FC where he netted three goals and four assists in 11 matches, and twice earned Championship Team of the Week selection. Prior to his Championship debut, he joined the Houston Dynamo’s preseason camp.

Foster has been called into service for the Reggae Boyz, Jamaica’s national team – for eight matches with five appearances. In his 2018 international debut, Foster scored against South Korea to earn a 2-2 draw. He was a member of the 2019 Gold Cup semi-finalist roster and CONCACAF Nations League B and qualifying squads.

Kwambe Re-Signs for Second Season with FC Tulsa

FC Tulsa announced on Thursday it had re-signed versatile Nigerian defender Solomon Kwambe for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.

Kwambe started the first four matches of the 2020 season for Tulsa but suffered a hamstring injury against Saint Louis FC in August which sidelined him for a month. Kwambe would start two more matches down the stretch as FC Tulsa advanced to the USL Championship Playoffs.

“We are all positive on the ability of Solomon Kwambe,” said FC Tulsa Head Coach Michael Nsien. “Solomon came into preseason last year in very good form. He was extremely important to us as he played heavy minutes at center back and full back. Our expectations will be high for Solomon to provide balance and durability to our back line. We want to see a complete season with Solomon, having now adapted both to the USL Championship as well as FC Tulsa’s expectations.”

Kwambe’s six appearances and 386 minutes in 2020 made him an important role player for the club. His 2.1 tackles per 90 minutes and 1.9 interceptions per 90 minutes were both third on the team.

“It means a lot to me because I'm coming back to finish what I've started with this great team,” Kwambe said. “I'm ready to rebound for this season. It was never my intention to deal with injury, but these things happen, and I thank God that I’m back and better. I'm looking forward to improving on the field for the team.”

Battery Pick Up Adesodun’s Contract Option for 2021

The Charleston Battery have announced defender Temi Adesodun will return to club for the 2021 season after exercising the Nigerian native’s contract option. Adesodun, who first trained on the Charleston roster in 2019, will look to continue contributing on the back line in his second full season for the Black and Yellow.

A former standout at the College of Charleston – where he was teammates with 2020 Championship All-League selection Leland Archer and Nico Rittmeyer – the 23-year-old native of Nigeria made two appearances for Charleston in his first professional season.

Adesodun had an impact in his brief action, however, as he helped the Battery seal their ninth Southern Derby cup in a 3-0 win against North Carolina FC on August 19. Then in the club’s regular season finale, Adesodun provided the assist on Stavros Zarokostas’ go-ahead goal against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The win was the Battery’s third in a row against the Rowdies and set up Charleston as the only team to defeat the eventual Eastern Conference Champions in 2020.
