Belmar set for second season in Sacramento; Rising FC signs Calistri to new contract

CHARLETON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Wednesday it had exercised its contract option to retain Zeiko Lewis for his third year with the club. The Battery's two-time Offensive Player of the Year has been a key figure for the club over the past two seasons, leading the team with 13 goals in that span.

A Bermuda international, Lewis has made 40 regular-season appearances for the Battery over the past two seasons and logged 2,772 minutes. In addition to his goals, Lewis has recorded seven assists and 73 chances created for the side, leading Charleston in both categories.

Lewis has also made 26 appearances for Bermuda in his career, scoring nine goals. Last year he helped lead the squad into the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup, the country’s first appearance at the tournament in its history.

The 26-year-old was a first-round selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls after competing collegiately for Boston College, and appeared 23 times for the Red Bulls II in the Championship before joining Icelandic club Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar the following year.

BELMAR RE-SIGNS WITH SACRAMENTO

Sacramento Republic FC announced today that Kharlton Belmar has signed a new contract that will add him to the 2021 roster, pending league and federation approval.Per club policy, the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“Kharlton showed his attacking versatility last season and was especially effective as a striker,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “His overall game elevated as the year progressed, and he added some important leadership elements to our team. We are excited to see what is in store for him in 2021 and beyond.”

Belmar made 14 appearances for Republic FC in his first season at the club, including the club’s Western Conference Quarterfinal against Phoenix Rising FC in the 2020 Championship Playoffs. He led the Indomitable Club with four assists in the abbreviated campaign, also scoring once.

The 2015 Championship Rookie of the Year with the Portland Timbers 2, Belmar has recorded 43 regular-season goals in his professional career, putting him tied for 18th in the league’s history. The 27-year-old helped lead Sporting Kansas City II to the 2017 USL Championship Final as he recorded 14 goals in the regular season.

PHOENIX BRINGS BACK CALISTRI WITH NEW DEAL

Phoenix Rising FC announced on Wednesday it had signed winger Joey Calistri to a new contract, pending league and federation approval. Calistri will enter his third season with Rising FC in 2021 after making 47 appearances for the club in the past two years.

“I am very excited to have Joey Calistri back with our team,” said Rising FC Head Coach Rick Schantz.  “Joey is the ultimate utility player, and he has scored some big goals for our club. Not only is he a great pro on the field, but an even better pro off the field. Joey comes to work every day ready to go. He is the perfect example for any young player.”

A former Homegrown Signing by the Chicago Fire, Calistri has recorded six goals and two assists for Rising FC in his two seasons at the club. Previously in the Championship, Calistri had a standout 2017 campaign on loan with FC Tulsa, where he helped lead the side to the USL Championship Playoffs, and the following year helped Saint Louis FC earn its first appearance in the postseason. Overall, Calistri has made 113 appearances and scored 20 goals in the Championship.

“I can’t wait to get back to work next year,” Calistri said. “I will do everything I can to help us bring home a championship for our fans.”
