El Salvador forward recorded 17 goals in two seasons for club during 2017-18 seasons

TULSA, Okla. – One of the best goalscorers in FC Tulsa history is set for his second stint in the Oil Capital of the World, as winger Joaquin Rivas was unveiled as the first new offseason signing by the club on Tuesday, pending league and federation approval.

Rivas scored 17 goals during the 2017 and 2018 seasons in Tulsa as he helped the side reach the USL Championship Playoffs in his first year. During the 2018 season, the El Salvador international set a single-season record with 12 goals for the club, and currently sits three goals behind Sammy Ochoa for the most tallies in FC Tulsa’s history.

“Joaquin is a player that Tulsa supporters will be very familiar with and excited to see back in our team,” said FC Tulsa Head Coach Michael Nsien. “Joaquin had great years here in Tulsa, and his style of play from the wing and his ability to combine inside fits our style of play perfectly. He can create his own opportunities and also set up chances for teammates. That goal and assist capability he possesses is what we want from that position.”

A former standout at UNLV collegiately, Rivas began his professional career with Sacramento Republic FC. Over the past two seasons he featured for Saint Louis FC, helping the side reach the USL Championship Playoffs in the 2020 season and scoring the decisive goals in its 1-0 victory against Hartford Athletic in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Rivas has recorded 20 goals and five assists overall in 102 appearances in the regular season and playoffs in the Championship.

Rivas has also made five international appearances for “La Selecta” and has scored one goal for his country, a match-winner in a friendly against Haiti in 2018. He last appeared in March of 2019 helping El Salvador to a historic 2-0 upset victory over Peru.

“Seeing how much the club has evolved made me want to be a part of the organization,” said Rivas. “Tulsa has given me many opportunities and success in my career. I am extremely excited to return to the place I’ve always had at heart.”
