Newton Among Three Additional Returnees for Indy in 2021

Thompson, Duke among SKC II returnees; Red Bulls II pick up options on Sowe, LaCava

INDIANAPOLIS – Indy Eleven announced on Monday it had picked up contract options on goalkeeper Evan Newton, midfielder Mitch Guitar and forward Nick Moon to add to its previously returning group of players for the 2021 USL Championship season.

Newton returns for his third season with Indy after a year that saw him become the first goalkeeper in the Championship’s history to reach 50 regular-season shutouts. The 32-year-old had previously claimed the mark for the most saves in the league’s regular season and is now set for his 11th season in the professional ranks after prior stops in the Championship at including OKC Energy FC, Sacramento Republic FC and FC Cincinnati.

Moon, meanwhile, recorded two goals and two assists in his first year in the Championship for Indy while appearing in all 16 regular-season contests for the side. A 2019 All-League selection in USL League One for Lansing Ignite FC, the 24-year-old is joined by Guitar, who joined Indy late in the 2020 season after electing to forgo his remaining eligibility at the University of Wisconsin to join the professional ranks.

“The return of the most successful goalkeeper in USL Championship history in Evan Newton provides another solid veteran presence for us to lean on in 2021,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “We also look forward to fostering the development of young players like Nick Moon and Mitch Guitar, and look forward to seeing their contributions grow next year.”

EIGHT SET TO RETURN FOR SPORTING KC II

Sporting Kansas City II announced on Monday it had exercised contract options for forward Enoch Mushagalusa and goalkeeper Remi Prieur, adding to six players that were previously under contract with the club for the 2021 Championship season in goalkeeper Brooks Thomson, defenders Petar Cuic and Kaveh Rad, midfielders Jake Davis and Christian Duke, and forward Dominik Resetar.

The club also announced it had extended an offer to defender Danny Barbir, who is out of contract with the club, and that contract negotiations were ongoing with the former U.S. Youth National Team player.

Sporting KC also announced it had declined contract options for defender Sam Raben, midfielder Duval Wapiwo and forwards Fredinho Mompremier and Jaret Townsend.

Goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt, defender Dillon Serna, midfielder Camden Riley and forward Will Little are out of contract with the club. Hildebrandt will return in 2021 for his second year as Sporting KC II’s goalkeeper coach.

RED BULLS II RETAIN SOWE, LACAVA

The New York Red Bulls II announced it had exercised the contract options of forwards Omar Sowe and Jake Lacava and remained in discussions with midfielder Kyle Zajec on a new contract as the club made its first roster moves of the offseason.  

New York also announced it had declined the options on goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley, defenders Roy Boateng, Preston Kilwien, Edgardo Rito, and Joesph Fala, midfielders Deri Corfe,Cherif Dieye, Samad Bounthong, and Barry Sharifi, and forward Sebastian Elney.

“Making decisions this year was particularly difficult after such an unusual year and due to the depth of talent we had,” NYRB II Head Coach John Wolyniec said. “The club is especially grateful to the players’ efforts in tough times and we wish them success going forward in their careers.”
