Black Gold Derby winner edges out New Mexico’s Muhammad for season-ending award

TAMPA, Fla. – On September 30, FC Tulsa’s Tobenna Uzo lifted his side to a thrilling late victory in the Black Gold Derby against OKC Energy FC at ONEOK Field to help pave the way to the club’s second postseason appearance in its history.

On Monday, Uzo’s goal also claimed its own honor as it was named the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Goal of the Year after defeated New Mexico United’s Saalih Muhammad for the honor in the Final of the bracket competition.

Uzo had already found the back of the net with 11 minutes to go to level the game after Energy FC had twice taken the lead against its in-state rival, setting up a big finish. Then in the 88th minute, Cristhian Altamirano picked out an angled cross from the right that found Uzo just inside the penalty area for a diving header that skipped into the bottom-right corner of the net and sent the home fans into celebrations.

The Goal of the Year award is Uzo’s second in a row. The 26-year-old claimed the 2019 award thanks to his spectacular bicycle kick for Tulsa against New Mexico United, and once again received support from the club’s fans to claim this year’s title.

Uzo earned 53 percent of the vote in the Final to edge out Muhammad for the award.
